Born and raised in the small village of La Font de la Figuera, south of Valencia, Javi Revert has been a driving force in revitalising the area's winemaking culture, working with its wealth of old vines and local varieties. In the words of Ferrán Centelles (JancisRobinson.com): “Javi Revert represents the ultimate expression of the new Mediterranean style” producing “wines of striking freshness”.
Javi works with 12 hectares of organically farmed, predominantly north-facing vineyards in Los Juncarejos, the mountainous area surrounding La Font de la Figuera at around 700 metres elevation. Six hectares are old, bush-vine vineyards he has revived and include the 2.5-hectare ‘Micalet’ vineyard originally planted by his great-grandfather in 1948. The remaining six are abandoned plots that he has replanted or regrafted with indigenous varieties, with a particular focus on Arcos, a heat-resistant, thick-skinned, late-ripening red grape which was on the brink of extinction. With the help of Pedro Parra, Javi has mapped the soils of the different plots which are predominantly limestone-based with pockets of iron-rich sand, silt, and clay. In addition to being certified organic, Javi follows biodynamic principles and has worked with Josep Ramón, an expert in regenerative agriculture, to protect the biodiversity of the area and to nurture a rich ecosystem, where vines thrive alongside Mediterranean flora, olive and almond trees.
Much like he does at Finca Sandoval, Javi takes a hands-off, minimal-intervention approach in the winery, to allow these remarkable vineyards to speak for themselves. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and a large proportion of whole bunch in the case of the reds, enhancing their lifted character. The wines are then aged in a combination of concrete tanks and eggs, large format used oak and traditional glass demijohns.
