2022 is a triumphant vintage forHenschke and marks 70 years of their celebrated ‘Mount Edelstone’ Shiraz, one of Australia’s longest consecutively produced single-vineyard wines.
The Henschke family have made wine at their estate in the Eden Valley since 1868, with fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke taking over in 1979. Together with his viticulturist wife, Prue, they have built upon their inheritance, transforming this traditional producer into one that is celebrated worldwide.
Prue’s pioneering work in the vineyard cannot be underestimated. Over the past 50 years, she has worked tirelessly, vine by vine, to improve the health of the vineyards through meticulous soil management and reintroducing native plants to promote biodiversity. Applying organic and biodynamic practices has been critical in nurturing the health of the Henschke vineyards.
The 16-hectare ‘Mount Edelstone’ vineyard, purchased by Cyril Henschke in 1974 after decades of sourcing fruit from it, is a key example of this stewardship. Cyril Henschke first produced ‘Mount Edelstone’ as a single-vineyard wine from the 1952 vintage, with the 1956 vintage subsequently enjoying overnight success in wine shows and bringing national recognition to an already respected estate. The creation of 1952 Mount Edelstone was a pivotal moment in Australia’s fine wine story.
The 2022 vintage reflects the Henschke family’s enduring commitment to preserving old vines and expressing these remarkable vineyards in the glass.

“The finish is as neat and ordered as any I have tasted, and given its youth and grandeur, this alone offers a fascinating insight into the extraordinary balance across the entire landscape of the palate.”

“…Beautifully balanced on the palate, showing a graceful arc of travel, the fine tannins melting away into the fruit. The finish stretches out persistently, all detail and elegance.”

“…This is very fine, with layers of fruit, spice and complex herbal notes. This has massive potential for ageing.”
