Collection: Marco Abella
In the twelfth century, the French Carthusian monks arrived in Priorat and introduced the varieties that are today typical of the region: Grenache and Carignan. The Marco family, winegrowers since the fifteenth century, was based in Porrera, as already stated in the first census of Catalonia (1497) as well as in the subsequent census carried out by the Count of Floridablanca in 1787.
At the end of the XIX century, phylloxera, as in the rest of Europe, ravaged the vineyards and the family emigrated to Barcelona while preserving the lands of Porrera.
In 1898 Ramón Marco Abella was born in Porrera. An enterprising man with a strong character, he decided to give life again to what had been one of the best vineyards in the Priorat region.
After a century, his grandson David and his wife Olivia, decide to take a step forward by building a modern winery. The couple abandoned their respective professional careers to dedicate themselves exclusively to their passions and built the Marco Abella winery, thus contributing to the world prestige of Priorat wines.
The soil of Priorat provides a unique character of minerality to the wines of this denomination. It is an arid terrain, characterized by the presence of strata of slate called slate. Vines are cultivated on terraces or hillsides on the steep slopes of the hills, at a height between 200m and 700m. Priorat has a very particular microclimate with dry and warm summers and cold winters, with very low annual rainfall and very high temperature differences between day and night. Ripening is slow and that is why we obtain wines with complexity. In Porrera the influence of the Mediterranean climate is partially neutralized by the winds.
The height in Porrera is higher than the average of the DOQ Priorat and the vineyards are the highest in Porrera between 450 and 710 meters above sea level. This gives a freshness, aromatic intensity and aging capacity to their wines due to a much longer and slower harvest allowing the grapes to grow and form calmly.
Marco Abella's wines are a clear expression of the land that gives them life. The 30 hectares of vineyards are spread over six different plots located at a height of between 350m and 680m. This peculiarity gives their wines a unique freshness.
