Fabulous Riesling from one of Australia's most famous and celebrated winemakers John Vickery- widely regarded as one of, if not, Australia's greatest ever producer of Riesling. With well over 50 years in the business John launched his own label a few years ago making a Barossa- Eden Valley Riesling and a Clare - Watervale Riesling. The chief winemaker is Keeda Zilm. The wines win awards and plaudits evey year. From time to time and certainly not every year some block stand out especially for longer aging potential.
Textural, chalky acid with lean lines. Vibrant and zippy, moving through to a long, lingering finish. From the 2019 vintage, two small parcels from the Koerner vineyard, 'G1' and 'G4' blocks stood out for their unique character and potential for ageing, and were kept separate from the main Watervale blend.
"Such an interesting riesling. So much body and such good intensity. It’s textural too. It tastes of lime leaf, lemon, gravel, wet slate and orange blossom. I thought it was going to be sweet but then it wasn’t; it’s just the body of it, the way it balloons in the mouth. It’s well worth tracking down. It will age but personally I would drink it young. I’m tossing up 93/94 but opted higher on the grounds of personality and intensity, if not for out-and-out length." 94 pts Campbell Mattinson The WineFront
