Tinto Pesquera is one of the most famous names in Ribera del Duero. Best known for the quality of its red wines, the estate also makes a superlative white wine, produced to great acclaim but only in tiny quantities. On the banks of the Duero (at 900 metres above sea level), on small parcels of calcareous soils and mixed among the Tempranillo vines, grow the Albillo Mayor white grapes. Originally planted as a variety for blending (and a handy dessert for the pickers at harvest time), the Fernández Rivera family saw the potential of this indigenous variety and now produces a tiny amount of award-winning white wine from the fruit.
Light and aromatic in style, Albillo Mayor comes with a rich mouthfeel and tropical notes. The team has carefully picked their fruit and worked to bring out the best in this under-appreciated variety, with nine months on lees in new French oak barriques.
