The grapes for the Rocking Horse were sourced from a number of very carefully selected growers around the Western Cape. The Roussanne and the Chardonnay come from younger trellised vines, with an average age of 14 years planted in Stellenbosch and Paardeberg mountain on a combination of clay and decomposed granite. Semillon Blanc from Franschhoek, Clairette Blanche from Stellenbosch and Chenin Blanc from Paardeberg add depth and textural complexity to this Cape white blend as they are sourced from old, low-yielding bush vines estimated to be approximately 40 years old. It's fresh with great complexity and great with food, think fish (even sushi) through to lightly spiced Asian food and white meats. Textural and intriguing, creamy and nutty with great acidity - its absolutely fabulous! Maybe the best Rocking Horse yet, albeit from the cool 2022 vintage.
"Rocking Horse affords John Seccombe the chance to show his skills as a blender. Based on Semillon, with the remaining 65% made up of Roussanne, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Clairette Blanche, this seven vineyard cuvée uses grapes from five different regions. Pithy, tangy and very lightly wooded, it has wet stone, quince and green apple flavours and a twist of orange zest." 95 pts Wine of The Year Tim Atkin MW South Africa Report 2023
