The Columella has taken on many dimensions and interpretations over time, with quality being the central pillar. Varietal changes and viticultural improvements have most positively improved overall quality.
"The best Columella since 2019 in my opinion – a wine that also achieved a “perfect” 100-point score – this is now a nine-variety Mediterranean blend from a dozen different Swartland sites, dominated by the Paardeberg. Syrah takes the lead, accounting for 40% of the cuvée, but this is a collective effort that includes Grenache, Cinsault and even a little Pinotage among other grapes. Violet, thyme and fynbos aromas lead you into a palate of wonderful
density and energy, with sculpted tannins, subtle minerality and flavours of tangerine, blackberry and red cherry framed by 5% new oak. One of the greatest-ever South African wines. 2028-40" 100pts Tim Atkin MW South Africa Report 2026
