DUE APRIL 2025
In Mallaura tinto we aim to reflect the landscape of our estate located on the Fontanars dels Alforins. In 2020 we moved to Casa Colaus and after working on the estate for 3 years, we decided to make a wine from 30-year-old Monastrell and Graciano vines. Graciano is a variety that has always seduced me, both in my early days working in Rioja, and in my years working in my family's nursery in Valencian lands.
Mallaura tinto is a wine from our Casa Colaus estate, at the top of the Serra Grossa. It is a site located in the upper part of the estate, at 700 meters with a southern exposure, surrounded by pine forests, holm oaks and olive trees. The Monastrell is located on 2 calcareous clay terraces. The Graciano comes from a 30-year-old plot of calcareous marl. The Graciano variety provides freshness and acidity, and as it has a long cycle it adapts well to our area.
Fermentation with native yeast in 2 small open stainless steel tanks of 2000 litres with 50% whole grapes. Maceration for 20 days with light piegage at 28-30 degrees
Aging: 10 months in vats
"There's a new red blend, the 2023 Mallaura Tinto, produced with 60% Monastrell and 40% Graciano, an unusual blend that works surprisingly well. It was produced with grapes from 30-year-old vines in Casa Colaus, where he moved in 2020. It's serious, a little closed, austere and nuanced, elegant and insinuating. It has moderate ripeness and a contained 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.6 and 5.1 grams of acidity, coming through as harmonious, elegant and balanced. It has very pure, focused and pristine flavors of red berries and flowers, a very fine thread and elegant, fine-grained tannins. It fermented with 50% full clusters and matured in a small oak vat for 10 months. A great debut! 2,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024. It's drinking well but should keep and improve in bottle." 95 pts Luis Gutiérrez The Wine Advocate
