Tondonia Gran Reserva is made only in exceptional years and is an absolute rarity. This has to be up there as one of the finest red wines from Spain. The wine is made from grapes grown from the Vina Tondonia vineyard: a blend of Tempranillo (75%), Garnacho (15%), Graciano and Mazuelo (10%), the 2001 has spent ten years in barrel and a further 12 years in bottle before being released. The colour is a vibrant red leading slightly towards amber. On the nose, there is still a fresh texture with notes of vanilla and dried berry aromas, warm spice and even some balsamic notes. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-grained, velvety tannins and a chalky, almost salty finish.
