The Old Vines White is sourced from seven different low-yielding (4-6 tonnes per hectare) vineyards in the Swartland, with 62% Chenin Blanc being supplemented by 38% Clairette Blanche, 10% Semillon Gris, 8% Grenache Blanc, 5% Viognier, and 2% Verdelho. The winemaking is similar to the Single Terroir Chenins: whole bunch pressing and fermentation in barrel with 100% malolactic fermentation. It is aged for 11 months in a combination of old French oak 500-litre barrels and 2,000-litre foudre.
The wine has got a lovely richness combined with a freshness. Akin to a quality white Burgundy on the nose with some added spice. Rich and full, lovely acidity, stone fruits and a creamy, almost a hint of butterscotch on a long textural finish. Lovely wine and capable of matching some fairly rich dishes.... turkey even !
