The flagship wine of Mount Pleasant, the Maurice O'Shea Shiraz, is only made in exceptional vintages. It is a blend of the best fruit from the oldest vineyards: the fruit comes from the Old Hill, Old Paddock, Rosehill 1946 and 1965 vines, which are old and low-yielding and produce concentrated flavours. The Old Hill vines were the first block purchased by Maurice O'Shea and some vines were planted in 1880, they are some of the oldest in the Hunter Valley and produce exceptionally intense wines. The Old Paddock was planted in the 1920s, producing high-quality fruit with good aspects for protection from the hot, humid summers. The typical red volcanic soils are ideal for Shiraz. The Rosehill Shiraz is planted on a hillside with a good northerly aspect, receiving plenty of sunlight, which is perfect for ripening, and the vineyard produces earthy, savoury flavours. The Pinot Noir comes from the MV6 clone, which is significant as it is an original planting of MV6, one of Australia's oldest clones of Pinot Noir.
"Fruit sourced from the Old Hill, Old Paddock and Rosehill Vineyards. Matured in 20% new large format French oak for 14 months. This is a truly sensational release. It has flow, fruit and form, but the drama is in the finish, which shoots majestically into the distance. This wine pretty much has it all. It fans classic regional red flavours across the palate; its core is strong and pure; its balance would do a yoga instructor proud; and it has X-factor up to its eyeballs." 98pts Campbell Mattinson, James Halliday Wine Companion
"The winemaking and style of these 2017 reds is probably the best I’ve seen from this venerable old winery. Hats off to Adrian Sparks and Jim Chatto. This is a mix of Rosehill and ‘Estate’ fruit, with a sneaky, but very clever addition of 6% Pinot Noir. It’s now being made in a way that O’Shea would approve of, I suspect.
"It’s a beautiful wine, excellence in simplicity and verity of fruit, rather than industry in the winery. Perfumed, so fine and long, effortless flow and sense of grace, with an amalgam of mixed berries, spice, aniseed, and earth, supple but deep-seated and controlling tannin, bright acidity, and a soaring finish. Even as a young wine, it floors you with its quiet authority, confidence and charm. It’s totally at ease with itself, you might say. Best O’Shea of the modern era by a stretch, for me. Toying with a 98 point score, but let’s be patient, eh?" 97 pts Gary Walsh The Winefront
