Grenache is a very widely planted grape. It can give big yields, and high alcohols vey easily, so it can be the base of some very cheap wines, however, from older vines, lower yields etc it can make some fabulous wines. It's a fairly large thin skinned grape, so you don't get big colours or big tannins, making approachable fruit drive wines that are becoming increasingly popular.
