Le Riche is the master of modern Cape Cabernet, skillfully blended here with Cinsault, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. A wine of great appeal and freshness that over delivers on all fronts. We had winemaker Christo Le Riche over for a tasting in May and all the wines were great, the Richesse really over delivers. The 2022 is a touch more floral and juicy with the Cinsault being a touch more evident in the blend.
Grapes were carefully selected and hand-picked from vineyards located in Firgrove, Jonkershoek, Helderberg, Bottelary and Raithby. The wines were fermented separately until dry in traditional open concrete tanks with regular manual plunging. After malolactic fermentation in tank, the components were transferred to French oak barriques for 12 months maturation. After blending, the finished wine was aged a further 8 months in barrique and foudre. No fining and minimal filtration.
Fresh, vibrant aromas of raspberry and blackcurrant are supported by hints of cedar and white pepper. The aromas are mirrored on the palate with succulent, juicy fruit and mouth-filling flavours of red cherry and plum. Fine, chalky tannins enhance the silky mouthfeel and long, delicate finish. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds body and complexity whilst the Cinsaut brings great perfume and accessibility to this versatile wine.
