"The light red 2023 Fundamentalista was produced mainly with Bobal but also has other red varieties found co-planted with it in the old vineyards (including around 20% white grapes!), and they consider it their most traditional wine, a field blend fermented with whole clusters that were foot trodden and matured in concrete. It's pale, with a bright ruby color and a very expressive nose that's redolent of red fruit and flowers with a hint of red licorice and an herbal twist. It has a moderate 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.66 and a medium-bodied palate with pristine flavors and very fine tannins. It's not only a light wine, it's serious and chalky, with clout. This has to be the most elegant and precise Fundamentalista to date " 93+ Luis Gutiérrez The Wine Advocate (2023 vintage)
All the varieties were hand-picked simultaneously and transported to the winery where they were foot treaded. The grapes were cofermented using indigenous yeasts in stainless-steel, with 40% whole bunches adding lift and a short 8-10 day maceration adding structure. The wine was matured for 8 months in a mix of 1000 litre clay amphorae and stainless-steel tanks before bottling without fining or filtration.
This new 2024 is a delicious wine and my favourite vintage yet, its a touch riper -floral, aromatic and juicy, lots of crunchy berry fruits, fresh with a soft almost creamy finish. Serve cool and its wonderfully vibrant and great with a whole range of tapas dishes, also works well with spicy Asian food especially more along the Thai side of things.
