A gorgeous blend of 55% Pinot Gris with 40% Pinot Blanc and 5% Aligoté, this long-term NYW favourite from Au Bon Climat has a nose of ripe peach and yellow apple with a generous infusion of toast. The aromas are not overt or brash in any way though; the fruit is quite held back, enhanced by a honeyed character, alongside a touch of vanilla and spiced pear.
The palate is delicious. It is broad-textured without being rich, brimming with flavours of spiced pear and peach, all complemented by hints of cinnamon, cardamom and a lick of white pepper. But the fantastic thing about this wine is its wonderful freshness. A fine core of acidity weaves its way across the palate whilst generous waves of white peach and yellow apple roll through leaving a welcome warmth, which perfectly balances out the pure refreshment of the core. More notes of toast and brioche follow on the long, rewarding finish. This an amazingly harmonious white wine in which Pinot Gris richness is beautifully offset by the zing and clarity of Pinot Blanc. Drink 2022-2032.
