Situated at the foot of the Du Toitskloof Pass, this site offers altitude and granite-rich soils with clay and quartz. The clay element offers high water retention properties and releases much needed water during the warm summer months. The estate ranges from 220 metres to 330 metres. The vineyards are exposed to strong winds that naturally reduce yields and offer a much-needed cooling influence in Paarl's warm, dry climate. This wine is an interplanted field blend, made up of 16 varieties, planted as bush vines in soils rich in decomposed shale. The varieties include Chenin Blanc, Piquepoul, Verdejo, Clairette Blanche, Pinot Gris, Macabeo, Grenache, Semillon, Roussanne, Vermentino, Marsanne, Petit Manseng, Albariño, Palomino, Chardonnay and Grillo. The vineyard is manually cultivated, with a commitment to sustainable farming. Natural predators are used in place of pesticides and the vines are hand-harvested.
Fascinating and very complex, long, mineral intensity, some honeysuckle, wild herbs, peach and other stone fruits. Aged in amphora and concrete egg.
