Priorat's defining feature is llicorella — dark, heat-retaining slate that vineyards are terraced into on impossibly steep hillsides in inland Catalonia. Old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena grown here produce some of Spain's most concentrated, mineral-driven reds, low in yield and high in intensity. It's a small, hard-to-farm region, which keeps production limited and prices at the higher end of Spanish wine.
