The Pfalz lies in the rain shadow of the Haardt Mountains, making it warmer and drier than most of Germany and giving its wines a riper, fuller character than the delicate styles further north on the Mosel. Riesling remains the leading grape, but the Pfalz's warmth has also made it Germany's most productive region for red wine, particularly Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Dornfelder.
Key grapes: Riesling, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Gewürztraminer
