Marlborough, at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, transformed global expectations of Sauvignon Blanc almost overnight when its first commercial vintages appeared in the early 1980s. Long, sunny days and cool nights, combined with free-draining, stony soils, produce a style unlike anywhere else — intensely aromatic, with pungent passionfruit and capsicum notes and racy acidity. The region also makes an increasing amount of excellent Pinot Noir and traditional-method sparkling wine.
Key grapes: Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
