Macedonia, in Greece's cooler, more continental north, is the heartland of Xinomavro — a grape often compared to Nebbiolo for its pale colour, high acidity and firm tannins, capable of real ageing despite its lighter appearance. Naoussa and Amyndeon are the region's best-known appellations for it, while the area also produces fresh whites and, in Amyndeon, some of Greece's few sparkling wines.
