Jumilla sits on a hot, dry, high-altitude plateau in southeastern Spain, where sandy soils meant many of its vines survived the phylloxera epidemic that devastated most of Europe's vineyards in the 19th century — some Monastrell here is still grown on its original, ungrafted rootstock. Monastrell (Mourvèdre) is the region's dominant grape by far, making deeply coloured, richly fruited reds that offer serious concentration at accessible prices.
