A family affair

Chiara Boschis is one of Barolo’s most influential winemakers. Born into the Boschis-Borgogno family, founders of the Giacomo Borgogno estate, she grew up in vineyards but wasn’t expected to lead them—her brothers were. After studying business in Turin and working briefly in consulting, she returned to wine.

In 1980, when Gigi Pira of E. Pira died without heirs, Chiara persuaded her parents to buy the estate. By 1990 she was running it herself. She broke with local tradition, introducing green harvesting, shorter fermentations, and French oak barriques. Her first release, the 1990 Barolo Riserva Cannubi, was a success, winning Italy’s Tre Bicchieri award and gaining international attention.

For twenty years she managed the winery alone, becoming the first female winemaker in the Langhe and proving herself in a male-dominated field. In 2010, her brother Giorgio joined, and together they expanded into new vineyards in Monforte and Serralunga. They also refined the style, reducing new oak and reintroducing large casks.

Chiara has long championed sustainability. She farmed without chemicals from the start, achieved organic certification in 2014, and led the Cannubi Bio project, convincing most growers in the cru to go organic.

Today, E. Pira produces only about 3,000 cases a year, but Boschis’s role in shaping modern Barolo is far greater than her winery’s size.
