Collection: Domaine de Marcoux En Primeur 2022

Sisters Sophie and Catherine Armenier have elevated Marcoux to the very highest ranks. Today, Sophie diligently runs the winery, while her son Vincent Estevenin looks after the vineyards. Now, there are 27 hectares split into over 20 parcels: 18 hectares lie in the heart of the prime Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir of La Crau plateau. The remainder rest in Lirac and the other Côtes du Rhône villages. Certified as organic by Ecocert as early as 1991, this year marks five decades of rigorous organic and then biodynamic principles. One of the joys of Marcoux’s delicious Châteauneuf-du-Pape is it is made from fruit grown all over the appellation, making it a wonderfully representative style for all to appreciate, whilst the Vieilles Vignes is their top cuvée. It’s made from two parcels of outstanding, old-vine Grenache: Charbonnières, planted in 2000 and Esqueirons, planted in 1949.

VINTAGE

The combination of the drought, followed by the devastating hailstorm on La Crau on 14th August was fairly brutal for 2022 production levels at Domaine de Marcoux – especially painful given this is such a delicious vintage for this wonderful family team. The result was the second lowest yield ever at the domaine, a yield which was half of what they achieved in 2023. The most evident casualty was their fabulous Vieilles Vignes cuvée, which Sophie and Vincent were sadly unable to justify making this year. The silver lining, is that all that gorgeous, old vine fruit went into the straight Châteauneuf-du-Pape, making it exceptionally delicious (and a must-have wine this vintage).
