The Liberator 'The Francophile' Chenin Blanc
The Liberator is a series of mostly one-off parcels sourced by UK MW Richard (Rick) Kelley whom i have know for 22 years and even worked together 1990/91 ! This however is going to be a consistent wine so pleased with the old bush vine resource Rick has found. These parcels were selected from two growing sites, namely the Bottelary Hills and the Simonsberg mountains. In collaboration with Rick's and our old friend Carl van der Merwe, who was chief winemaker at DeMorgenzon, they were fermented in stainless steel tanks to maintain freshness. Without recourse to any malo-lactic fermentation, the wine was aged on its lees, prior to being bottled. Definitely has a nod to the Loire, a fresh green apple nose with hints of pear. Clean, fresh and dry on the palate, zesty and minerally with ripe pear, a touch of fresh honey and a tangy clean finish. Delicious although quite (deliberately) different to the multitude of Cape Chenin's at this price. The new 2020 is a touch riper and has a little more weight, though stylistically very similar.
