Danbury Ridge Pinot Noir 'Octagon Block'
This is a fabulous wine from Danbury Ridge Wine Estate, with amazing vineyards in a unique microclimate in Danbury, Essex. They achieve natural ripeness of at least 13% every vintage so far, even in cooler wetter years like 2019, and to an extent the late Summer/early Autumn of 2020.
This, as do all the releases from 2018, take English still wine to a new quality level. Even more so the two Octagon Black wines.
This is from the Octagon Block vineyard that just seems to have that extra special quality, picked 7-8 days later than the regular Pinot Noir -only 888 bottles produced.
From young vines this is really quite something, 13.5% natural alcohol, aged in c 60% new French oak for 18 months, bottled unfined and unfiltered, even vines this young produced fruit with such depth and extract that the oak is perfectly assimilated. Served blind i would put this as really high quality California, maybe Oregon or high class Burgundy. Floral, pretty, perfumed nose. Lovely ripe black and red berry fruits, rich and quite powerful with a lovely lift on the intense yet fresh finish. Ripe tannins too on a finish which has real intensity but also freshness. Mindblowing !!!
