Bodega Mustiguillo ‘Finca Calvestra’
This is a delicious single vineyard wine made from the Merseguera variety. Labelled Vino de Espana as it does not confirm to any DO. Merseguera was close to extinction a few years ago, traditionally high yielding, low acid and frankly not very good! Here in the Utiel Requena region in the province of Valencia the 900m above sea level vineyards produce something quite special. The yields are much lower, the vines all planted on calcareous soils. The grapes are fairly late to ripen. Organic production, wild yeasts and no oak, Stone fruit, quite floral with a touch of spice on the nose- not a million miles from Gruner Veltliner. Fresh on the palate, again stone fruits, good acidity and a pronounced stony minerality. Has an intensity- a spicy depth that makes each glass more interesting. I had this at a restaurant in Valencia recently and it was very food friendly across a lot of dishes. Apparently it ages really well too. We love the wines from this winery and they are making some great wines across the range.
