Much of Italy experienced back-to-back brilliance in the vintages 2015 and 2016; Trentino and its leading estate, Tenuta San Leonardo, are no exception. Just as exciting as the sheer quality of the wines is the contrast in style. While 2015s are so often plush, sensual, dense, fruit-packed, their 2016 counterparts show a more ‘classical’ style, majoring on grace, poise and proportion. So it is with San Leonardo, which presents a fresher, more obviously bordeaux-inspired profile in 2016 – and yet no bordeaux weighing in at 13% alcohol with this degree of freshness would also have the stunning underlying substance and grip of the San Leonardo. The Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner is right to observe that “Sassicaia and San Leonardo seem like brothers separated in childhood”, both wines being the creations of the late legendary winemaker Giacomo Tachis. While Sassicaia today is quite a different beast to earlier, 20th century vintages, San Leonardo has remained stylistically closer to its original conception – and price! – while gaining the higher score from Larner in both 2014 and 2015. We eagerly await her verdict on this latest vintage…
