This Essex vineyard and winery is gaining an international reputation for its Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. The estate sits in the Crouch Valley, one of the warmest and driest corners of England. Their vineyards are planted 40-50m above sea level and are sloped southwards. Importantly, the vineyards escape the worst of prevailing storms from the southwest and are, crucially, generally frost-free. Producers in Sussex and Kent talk about the chalk beneath the vines whereas at Danbury Ridge, they are convinced that it is the clays and gravels below the surface of their vineyards that are key to the quality of their still Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
