Collection: Burgundy 2022 En Primeur

Following 2021, one of the smallest productions in decades, the relatively good crop levels of the 2022 vintage is clearly marked by welcomed enthusiasm by all Producers, Merchants, and Burgundy lovers alike. And to add to the good news, the quality is also there in abundance!

2022 is still somewhat behind in terms of normal expected crop volume levels and wasn’t without its challenges, with long periods of very hot weather, fortunately, relieved by enough rain in most communes to sustain. Some villages encountered a mid-season surprise with too much rain, like Gevrey Chambertin and to a lesser degree Morey St Denis, where 100mm+ in excess of rain fell in 1 hour at the end June (60mm within 20 minutes) causing an initial mode of havoc which later revealed itself to being a blessing in disguise as an enigmatic positive outcome for the entire season.

Generally, the year was very warm with dry weather (drought) right through to the harvest which started almost by 3 weeks earlier than 2021, with the welcoming rain helping to preserve foliage and the yields, producing an exceptional vintage come harvest. One of the main features of the vintage is the natural freshness found in both the whites and reds.

Overall, the quality of the whites is very impressive, and the wines are expressing precise definition of different terroirs. The acidity is present and welcome, with many wines having more volume without showing any heaviness. The reds have the ripe red fruit of the 2019s but with more acidity emphasising salinity and minerality. Like with the white wines, there are so many precise reflections of terroir here; the structure is in tune with the expected level and many generic or village level wines are so dangerously appealing at their early stage. Going up to the 1er Crus and Grands Crus the level of ripe tannins increases, with wines projecting the wonderful red fruit notes with enticing freshness conveying.

The 2022 reds are some of the most attractive young Burgundies I have tasted in nearly 40 years and exuberate premium wines that will always drink well, from their youth right through to their tertiary plateau in development. The sweetness of the fruit is perfectly balanced by the acidity and ripe tannins. Many wines will be approachable early, but the majority hold the right potential with top hallmarks to last for many years!
