Collection: Bodegas R. López de Heredia New Release
Bodegas López de Heredia is one of the foundation stones of the modern Riojan wine industry. Unusually for Rioja, Lopez de Heredia produce wines solely from the fruit of their own 170 hectares of vines. These vines are in four separate vineyards arranged on the alluvial slopes overlooking the river Ebro, on the cusp of the sub regions of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Each is given its own expression in their wines Tondonia, Bosconia, Cubillo and Gravonia.
We are very pleased to have secured a small allocation of the latest releases from this venerable Bodega. We have three whites, the 2011 and 2012 vintages of the Tondonia Blanco Reserva, with six years of barrel age and more than four years of bottle age and the 2015 Viña Gravonia that has seen four years in cask and at least the same again resting in bottle before release.
The reds include the 2001 Tondonia Gran Reserva. These wines are made only in exceptional years and this release has to be up there as one of the finest red wines from Spain. A blend of Tempranillo (75%), Garnacho (15%), Graciano and Mazuelo (10%), the 2001 has spent ten years in barrel and a further 12 years in bottle before being released. We also have the 2011 Tondonia Reserva that exhibits the wonderful ‘Tondonia’ character of rich, red and black fruit mixed with leather and cured jamón but at a more approachable price than the Gran Reserva.
